Biography
Born in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo) in
Mozambique in 1934, was educated in the Liceu Nacional in Mozambique and at the
London School of Economics, University of London (B. Sc. (Econ.) 1957). Held
appointments at the Universities of Leeds (1959-64) and Essex (1964-71), and at
the University of Oxford (St. Antony’s College), 1971-2001, as well as visiting
appointments at Harvard University (1966-67) and the University of Pennsylvania
(1967-1968). Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Social Sciences, University of
Lisbon, 2000-2005.
Research interests
Long-term research
interests in sociological theory, the philosophy of the social sciences, the
sociology of science, the philosophy and sociology of technology, and the
historical sociology of Portugal and Brazil.
